a.: Outside USA oils meeting; E2-96, E3-96 or E5-99 and CG-4, CH-4 or CI-4 (preferred) may also be used prior to Jan 2007 (EPA04). Oils of lower performance may only be used at a 50% oil drain interval reduction
b.: Alternative viscosity grades to improve starting ability where ambient below -20°C; 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, 10W-40. These oils must have ASTM D4741 viscosity 3.70 cP min. API CF-4 oils may be used with reduced drain intervals
c.: Engine application determines if cooled by water or air

Synthetic oils may be used if API licensed and meet Detroit Diesel requirements. Must not contain VI improvers for 2-stroke engines
2.: Fuel sulphur content above 0.5% may require higher alkalinity oils and reduced drain intervals. Low zinc, high TBN Marine/Industrial lubricants are recommended for marine and railroad applications of Series 149 and other 2-stroke engines where sulphur content exceeds 0.5%
