Lubricant / Capacity Notes

a.
Monograde SAE 30 or 40 are preferred where crankcase ventilation is closed to the atmosphere and ambient temperature is above 0°C. If multigrade oils are used in closed crankcase ventilation systems they must pass the MTU test method MTV 5040 'Deposit Forming Tendency of Engine Oils'
b.
Series 200 and Series 4000 both permit the use of a category 2 extended drain engine oil to ACEA E3-96, they will also accept ACEA E1-96 API CF or CF-4 oils provided that they have been approved for use by Detroit Diesel or MTU (Approved oils must also meet additional tests in DDC/MTU Engine Service Fluid Publication 7SE273). Their use will require a reduction in the oil drain interval
c.
Engine application determines if cooled by water or air

General Notes

1.
See Detroit Diesel Corporation Bulletin 7SE270 9706, 'Lubricating Oil, Fuel Oil and Filter Recommendations', for additional information on alternative lubricant requirements (DDC/MTU Series 2000/4000 only refer to Engine Service Fluid and Filter Requirements Publication 7SE273 9903). Synthetic oils may be used if API licensed and meet Detroit Diesel requirements. Must not contain VI improvers for 2-stroke engines
2.
Fuel sulphur content above 0.5% may require higher alkalinity oils and reduced drain intervals. Low zinc, high TBN Marine/Industrial lubricants are recommended for marine and railroad applications of Series 149 and other 2-stroke engines where sulphur content exceeds 0.5%
3.
Natural gas operation: See Bulletin 7SE272 for details.
